It's a deeply concerning and tragic phenomenon that some students in India face immense pressure and stress, often leading to mental health issues, including suicidal tendencies. The reasons behind this distress are multi-faceted and can vary from individual to individual. Several factors contribute to the high levels of stress among students undergoing coaching in India:

  • Intense Competition: The education system in India is highly competitive, particularly for entrance exams to prestigious institutions. The sheer number of students vying for limited seats creates a cutthroat environment that can be overwhelming.
  • Parental Expectations: Many students face immense pressure from their families to excel academically. Parents often have high expectations for their children, expecting them to secure a place in top-tier colleges.
  • Social Stigma: In Indian society, there is often a stigma attached to failure, especially when it comes to academic performance. This societal pressure can contribute to the mental health struggles of students.
  • Lack of Emotional Support: Students may lack proper emotional support systems. The focus on academic achievement sometimes overshadows the importance of mental and emotional well-being. Feeling isolated or unable to share their struggles may exacerbate mental health issues.
  • Long Study Hours: Coaching institutes often promote rigorous study schedules, leading to long hours of continuous study. The intense workload and lack of breaks can contribute to mental exhaustion and burnout.
  • Fear of Failure: The fear of not meeting academic expectations or failing in competitive exams can lead to heightened stress levels. Students may feel that their entire future depends on their performance in these exams.
  • Limited Recreational Activities: Due to the demanding study schedules, students may have limited time for extracurricular activities and hobbies. This lack of balance can impact mental health negatively.
  • Inadequate Mental Health Resources: There is a general lack of awareness and accessibility to mental health resources in many parts of the country. Students may not have access to counseling or mental health professionals when needed.

Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach involving educational reforms, increased awareness about mental health, and providing support systems for students. Initiatives that focus on promoting a healthier and more balanced approach to education, as well as increased access to mental health services, can play a crucial role in mitigating the risk of suicides among students undergoing coaching in India. In conclusion I want to convey a small message to modern parents through this poem:

Dear Dad and mom,

I do not want to be,

What you desire for me,

I do not want to be an Engineer,

Or attend IIT JEE,

I do not want to be a doctor,

Burning my midnight oil,

As I hate blood and have my fears,

I rather be an artist,

Or a florist,

Or a fashion designer,

Or a choreographer .

Your dreams are yours,

Do not force me to be in "ours".

Don't pressurize me,

It's kills my soul,

And my desire to live,

In this planet like a Zombie.
