“You can dance in the storm. Don't wait for the rain to be over before because it might take too long. You can do it now. Wherever you are, right now, you can start, right now; this very moment.” ― Israelmore Ayivor

Procrastination is the default nature of human brain to keep us secure. Why so? Because of evolution! Yes. Our brain is programmed to keep us safe, in any situation. Let it be your dream or calling. Because right now you are in your safe zone and you may have to change your current situation to do something new and your brain detects it as trouble for you and drives you towards the inactivity or procrastination.

I was also facing the same difficulties when I was in my previous job. Right after my MBA, I got an offer from a good company to take the marketing job. I was happy at that time and joined it. But I did not see what was coming next. I realized this later that it was a mistake and I should change it as soon as possible.

Interestingly nothing was so wrong with my colleagues, manager, or the company. They were really good people and helping me every time whenever I was in need. But I guess that was the issue, that there was no issue. It was my safe zone.

It is well said that “your salary is the bribe they give you to forget your dreams”.

I always knew that I can be a good leader. I can run my own business and make more money than I am making in my job. But again, my brain was stopping me. My safe zone was not allowing me to take the next level of the risk and change my future.

I have a habit of reading books and learning new things from podcasts. Besides this, I was also part of various groups where people used to share many new ventures and ideas. I have attended many entrepreneurial events and got a good network. All these things helped me a lot when I forced myself towards my dream. Especially my network.

Remember “your network is your net worth”.

I was reading “The 5 Second Rule” book by Mel Robbins. Those who don’t know, she grew totally from nothing. I listened to her podcasts too. She told if you want to make a decision, do it in 5 sec, else your brain will procrastinate it. This inspired me a lot. And I have applied it many times in my life.

When did I decide to resign? I was attending a networking session after my office. Sitting in one corner and talking with my friend. All of a sudden one gentleman came on our table and we started discussing. He was the C.E.O. of an educational startup that he founded some three years ago. He was looking for an agency that can help them with video recording and editing. Photography and video editing were my hobbies and I used to do it for my friends. But I never monetized it.

From nowhere I told him that “I can do it for you, but after my office hours and on weekends”. He agreed. Very next day he emailed me with his first assignment. It was never an issue for me. So I did it in no time. I was more surprised by the amount of money that I received after my first four assignments. It was almost twice than my one month salary.

This gave me confidence and I started taking more assignments from various groups, companies, and organizations. I asked my other friends too to help me and this is how we took our first step towards our dream. I decided to quit my job and to start my studio and video editing services.

My family was totally against my decision, but I stopped caring about them. Yes, it was difficult initially and I got many doubts over the period. The 5-second rule helped me every time to take more tough decisions and to expand my business. Now my business is making almost 10 times more money yearly than I was making in my job. It was my mistake that I did not listen to my inner voice. I did not realized that my hobby can be my business too. Why so?

I was afraid to leave my safe zone. I was not sure about the security and success of the money flow. Family and society were another major concern. I felt that what if I fail? How will I manage?

I would like to tell you if you are thinking of doing something new, DO IT NOW. !! Period. There is no tomorrow.

This is what I learned from my mistakes. Yes, no one will come to help you, and that is when you will learn to make the difference. That is when you will learn to provoke your leadership qualities which will help you to face the challenges. Remember the words of Mark Zuckerberg “the biggest risk that you can take is not taking the risk”. If you do not take it, you are anyways failed. So better take the decision and learn from it.

The biggest risk that you can take is not taking the risk. -Mark Zuckerberg
